FAQ Stairs & Railings
Yes. Let's schedule a time to discuss your custom staircase.
Yes! First step is understanding that the main cause of squeaky floors is movement. There are typically three (3) reasons movement occurs in your floor.
- Seasonal Movement - Floors expand and shrink with season change due to a lack of or too much humidity. This expanding and shrinking loosens flooring boards and will cause squeaks between flooring boards or within the fastener and subfloor.
- Subfloor Issues - Subfloor issues are common culprits of squeaky floor and should be addressed before new flooring is installed. Here are some common subfloor issues:
- Out of level subfloor
- Spacing between the subfloor and joists
- Subfloor seams off center with joists
- Improper subfloor material.
- Fasteners - Improperly fastening a floor is a sure way to cause squeaks. If the flooring is not installed with the proper fastener schedule (spacing between fastener) or wrong size fastener your floor will loosen and squeak. Over seating a fastener will also create squeaks when fastener pushes through the bottom of the board separating it from the subfloor
The cost of a new hardwood staircase depends on a couple of variables.
- Materials: Wood species, grade, width, finish, or prefinished flooring options.
- Style: texture, pattern, and color.
- Hardwood Flooring Promotes Healthier Living by minimizing the accumulation of dust, mold, and animal dander, which improves overall indoor air quality.
- Easy to maintain - Cleaning hardwood floors is simple. It only requires a basic wood floor cleaner and a dust mop for everyday sweeping. They are also more stain resistant than other types of flooring.
- Eco Friendly and sustainable - wood is an environmentally friendly choice that helps to insulate the home and lower energy bills. Wood flooring is also the most abundantly renewable flooring material available. It takes less energy to produce and can be recycled at the end of its life. The U.S. Forest Service states that the annual net growth for hardwoods is greater than the average annual removal rate. This means wood flooring is very sustainable with trees growing faster than they are being used today. Other flooring options like carpet or vinyl options use more chemicals and synthetic material to produce.
- Strength and durability - Hardwood floors can literally last for hundreds of years whereas other products have a much shorter lifespan. Wood floors can handle heavy foot traffic and can be repaired and refinished unlike carpet, tile, or vinyl flooring products.
- Timeless style - Hardwood has a unique and beautiful look. It is one of the oldest flooring materials there is, and it never goes out of style. Because of the large variety of trees and wood types, a world of colors, consistencies, designs, and grain patterns are available. Where other floors have to be replaced, wood flooring can be refinished to live a complete new life. When other floors will begin to look tired and worn, your hardwood floors will still look beautiful.
- Good investment - Hardwood flooring adds value to your home both economically and aesthetically. Remember that carpet, laminate, vinyl, linoleum and tile are all throw-away floors, once they are used up, they're destined for the dump. Meanwhile a hardwood floor can go 20 years or more when maintained well. Then you can sand it and finish it again and it's like new again! It’s reported to increase your home value by 3-5% and give homeowners a greater sense of enjoyment of their home.
The answer depends on the homeowner. Most factory finished or prefinished floors have the following:
Positive:
- Prefinished hardwood flooring offer a broader range of options for hand-scraping and distressed looks that can be achieved more economically than their on-site-finished counterpart.
- Convenience:
- Time Savings: The installation of a prefinished wood floor takes 1-3 days on average and there is no dry-time or cure time to contend with.
- Furniture: furniture can be shuffled around the working area rather than completely removed from the house.
- They can then be installed in one step without creating dust or fumes.
Negative:
- Prefinished wood floors will never be as smooth and flat overall as an onsite finished floor.
- You can experience some color variations between the boards since every piece is stained separately in a factory.
- Manufacturers are constantly discontinuing product lines so it may be very challenging to obtain more of the same flooring down the line if you need to.
Good:
Living rooms, dining rooms, dens, bedrooms, kitchens
Not Good:
Doesn’t work well in places where water is in consistent contact with the floor. Bathrooms, Laundry rooms, mud rooms
